The European Film Business and Law LL.M. | MBA is an international, part-time master’s programme offered by the Erich Pommer Institute in cooperation with the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF and the University of Potsdam.

The master’s programme is aimed at specialists and managers from the film and media industry, as well as qualified career changers with a university degree and some initial professional experience.

The importance of digitalisation and the inevitable focus on transformative leadership and resilience are clearer today than ever for the film and television companies of tomorrow.

The Executive Master's programme “European Film Business and Law LL.M. | MBA” imparts the skills and tools that professionals and executives in the film and television industry need to master these challenges and ensure the sustainable development of their companies as well as the dynamic growth of the market in Europe as a whole.

The programme offers comprehensive insights into the European audiovisual and entertainment landscape from both a business and legal perspective. In the second semester, MBA students expand their strategic and business management knowledge with a focus on the film and television industry. The programme covers key areas such as corporate strategy, strategic planning, business development, entrepreneurship, innovation, and change management. Students also deepen their understanding of contemporary economics, corporate finance, investments, and M&A from a business perspective. Furthermore, modules on audience, marketing, and sales address content strategy, audience development, and modern sales models, including direct-to-consumer approaches. An elective module allows students to further personalise their studies by choosing from specialised LL.M. offerings.

2nd Semester - Specialisation Modules for LL.M. Students

In the second semester, LL.M. students deepen their legal expertise with a strong focus on European and international business law. The curriculum covers core areas such as European business law, copyright and trademark law, competition law, employment law, and European broadcasting law, as well as key aspects of M&A. Students further develop their practical legal skills in areas such as dispute resolution, contract management, mediation and arbitration, as well as negotiation and conflict management. The programme is complemented by specialised topics in data and technology law, including AI, cyber law, and data protection. An elective module allows students to tailor their studies to their individual interests.

Project Module


In the third semester, students work in interdisciplinary teams on practical projects in collaboration with corporate partners or their own employers. The topics are set by the partners and focus on business or legal challenges within the European film and television industry. Throughout the module, students are supported by industry professionals as well as lecturers, with the process structured through kick-off sessions and group presentations.

Master's Thesis


In the fourth semester, students write their master's thesis as part of their chosen programme (LL.M. or MBA). The topic can be freely chosen and is often practice-oriented, with the possibility of integrating the research work into their daily work routine. Each master's thesis is supervised and accompanied by two lecturers.

Study Format


Courses are held in blocks and partly on weekends to enable study alongside work. The majority of the modules take place online, which facilitates access for international professionals. Students can participate in on-site weeks in Potsdam to exchange ideas in person and expand their network. The flexible choice of modules, different study formats, and the possibility of crediting previous academic achievements allow for an optimal balance between work, study, and family. The programme enables students to tailor their studies to their individual needs.

Choice of Degree

During the programme, students choose a specialisation either in the field of law (LL.M.) or in business administration (MBA). Both groups initially take the core modules together before specialising in the second semester. A double degree (LL.M. and MBA) is possible, with previously earned credits from the first degree being recognised. Additional tuition fees apply, and two separate applications are required.

Choice of Company Involvement

Students can choose whether to complete the programme with or without the involvement of a company. In collaboration with a company, the project module is carried out in the workplace, ideally with insights into various departments. Without company involvement, students complete the project module at one of the programme's partner companies.

Der Masterstudiengang kann sowohl im Vollzeit- als auch im Teilzeitstudium absolviert werden. Im Vollzeitstudium schließen die Studierenden in vier Semestern ab: Die ersten beiden Semester umfassen die Lehrveranstaltungen, gefolgt vom Projektmodul und der Masterarbeit. Das Teilzeitstudium verlängert das Studium auf sechs Semester mit einem flexiblen, individuell angepassten Stundenplan.

If you are interested in the MBA degree and obtained your previous degree outside Germany, you will additionally need a Preliminary Examination Documentation (VPD) via the platform uni-assist. We recommend that you plan this process early, as the issuance of the VPD can take some time.

You can claim the costs of professional development as business expenses for the self-employed or as work-related expenses for employees in your tax return.

Depending on how high personal income and thus the personal tax rate are, the tax office indirectly contributes to the costs of the MBA programme through tax reductions of up to 50%. Deductible expenses include tuition fees, specialist literature, study materials, application costs, and travel expenses. Additionally, the interest on an educational loan can also be claimed for tax purposes.

No. Specific industry experience is not a requirement. What is important is a university degree and at least one year of professional experience. The programmes are aimed at both career changers and professionals from the film industry.

For the EFBL programme, the following applies:

European Film Business and Law (MBA)

  • Another equivalent (e.g. foreign) degree (if applicable, proof of academic achievements via a diploma supplement or similar)
  • Proof of at least one year of professional experience
  • Proof of English language skills (at least C1 level)
  • UNIcert© Level III or IV
  • TOEFL® Internet-Based Test (iBT) or TOEFL iBT Home Edition with a score of at least 95
  • Cambridge English C1 Advanced (CAE) with a score of at least 180

  • Degree certificate from an English-speaking programme at a recognised university

Study format & process

Yes. The EFBL Master's programme isdesigned to be part-timeand can be combined with full-time or part-time employment.

Yes, a double degree is possible, provided the admission criteria for both degrees are met.

To this end, two semesters are added after obtaining the first degree to catch up on the relevant modules and to write the second master's thesis. A 50% discount is granted on the second degree.

Both MBA and LL.M. curricula have astandard study period of two years (4 semesters):

  • 1st–2nd semester:

    • A total of 10 modules must be selected from the 12 available

    • 6 core modules(mandatory for all students)

    • 3 elective modulesin the chosen programme (MBA or LL.M.)

    • 1 elective modulefrom the other programme

  • 3rd semester:

    • Practical project (usually as a group project, alternatively individually)

    • With at least3 years of relevant professional experiencethe project can be recognised.

  • 4th semester:

    • Master's thesis

The modular structure of the programme allows for flexible design of the study content. Therefore, part-time study is easily possible.

In principle, part-time study means that you complete only 15 ECTS instead of 30 ECTS per semester in the first two semesters, thus doubling the standard study period from 4 to 6 semesters.

The EFBL master's programme is predominantly conducted online, with two weeks of in-person classes:

  1. a presence week in autumn (November) of the first semester
  2. a presence week at the end of the second semester (September)

Degree & academic framework

Upon successful completion, students will receive aacademic master's degree:

  • LL.M. (Master of Laws)

  • MBA (Master of Business Administration)

  • or – upon completion of both programmes –both degrees

The degrees arejoint academic qualificationsof theFilm University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLFand theUniversity of Potsdamand comprise120 ECTS.

  • Students in theLL.M.-Programmare enrolled at theUniversity of Potsdam.
  • Students in theMBA programmeat theFilm University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF.
  • If both programmes are chosen, enrolment will take placesequentially. Already completed achievements will be automatically recognised; only missing modules and the respective thesis need to be completed.


Instalment payment

Students who wish to pay in instalments pay at the beginning of each semester in five instalments, with the enrolment fee and the instalment for the first semester to be paid relatively promptly.
